Call for Round 13 questions now open

The call for proposals to include a module of questions in Round 13 of the European Social Survey (ESS) is now open. 

This open competition offers teams of researchers the chance to include questions on a single academic area and/or policy concern within Europe. 

Teams can apply for either 15 or 30 item modules. The option to include a 15-item module has been introduced for Round 13 to encourage applications on relevant topics that may not require as many as 30 questions. 

Applications for new topics or repeated modules are invited from multi-national teams of 3-5 researchers based at institutions in at least three different ESS participating countries. 

Modules may either include a topic never covered by the ESS before or cover a topic and/or module that has previously been included but using a different approach. 

Repeat modules provide an opportunity to explore how attitudes and behaviour towards a given topic may have changed over time. 

In Round 10 (2020-22) of the ESS, the subjects covered were Europeans’ understandings and evaluations of democracy - repeated from Round 6 (2012/13) - and Digital social contacts in work and family life - fielded for the first time. 

In Round 11 (2023/24), rotating modules are being included on Social inequalities in health and their determinants - repeated from Round 7 (2014-15) - and Gender in contemporary Europe: rethinking equality and the backlash, a new module for this round. 

In Round 12 (2025-26), rotating modules will be included on Personal and social wellbeing - repeated from Round 6 (2012-13) - and Attitudes to immigrants and refugees - repeated from Round 7 (2014-15). 

There will be a two-stage application process for submitting Round 13 rotating module proposals - the deadline for Stage 1 applications is 26 April 2024. 

Following Stage 2 applications, two proposals will be chosen by our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) in November 2024, with the successful teams invited to work with our Core Scientific Team (CST) to develop the questions from January 2025. 

Round 13 fieldwork is currently scheduled to take place from September 2027, with the survey data collected made available for analysis in 2028 (more precise timings are to be confirmed). 

Round 13 will mark a significant change for the ESS with data collected using self-completion questionnaires (web and paper) rather than face to face interviews.
